ASTON MERRYGOLD: "I'M HAPPY TO BE RELEASING MUSIC. I HAVEN'T FELT THIS VIBE FOR A LONG TIME."

Words & Interview: By Rachel Dempster

Aston Merrygold recently triumphantly kick started a new chapter in his solo career, with the release of his undeniably catchy and infectious single, titled 'How Many Times.' The past twelve months have been crammed full for him - including being involved in several high-profile projects over the past several months aside from his music career, while also participating in the JLS reunion tour, which saw the band performing to legions of their fans in arenas across the UK and Ireland night after night.

'How Many Times' is a bass-heavy production that is the ultimate 2022 summer anthem. With his vocals also being perfectly balanced out against the production, you can't help but want to replay this track over and over again! With the previous release of other solo singles that include 'Get Stupid' and 'I Ain't Missing You' (featuring LDN Noise), the release of 'How Many Times' is a phenomenal way to start this new chapter!

Here at The Lowdown, we had the opportunity to speak exclusively with Aston Merrygold about the release of his new single, his stand-out memory from the JLS reunion tour, his plans for the rest of this year and more. Keep reading to check out what he had to say!

You are back with your first release of the year, 'How Many Times,' kicking off a new chapter in your music career. How does it feel to have new music released?

"It feels amazing! I honestly haven't felt this kind of vibe for a long time. I'm just happy to be releasing music!"

If you were to sum up 'How Many Times' in a couple of words, what words would you use?

"A love song with a twist."

How long did this single take to come together, right from the initial writing stages?

"Writing the song didn't take long at all. It flowed and came together nicely. I was able to work with a great team! I've had this song for a while. It's been reworked a bit since the conception."

Do you have a favourite lyric from the single?

"'F*** what's in my DM's, trust that you're my girlfriend."

Last year was also a big year for JLS, as the band finally got to perform at arenas around the UK and Ireland. What was it like for you to get out on stage and perform, especially after the tour being delayed several times due to the pandemic?

"It was so crazy! Coming back to arenas and filling them with that many people at such sensitive and uncertain times was the ice breaker a lot of people needed to get back to normal, including us!"

Do you have a stand-out memory from the tour?

"The stand-out for sure was the first scream whilst waiting under the stage - wow! I haven't felt that feeling in a long time."

You've also been involved in several other projects, including appearing on 'The Masked Singer,' launching your podcast and you are also set to appear in 'Footloose.' Have you enjoyed being able to be involved in such projects, while also still being able to focus on your music?

"It's been amazing! The juggle is real, but I love this industry, so I welcome every new project!"

Will there be some live performances later this year, allowing you to perform your new music?

"Nothing is set in stone, but I'll 100% be back on that stage this year to perform new music."

Are fans set to hear even more music throughout the remainder of this year?

"I've got a lot of music coming this way, which I'm excited for! 'How Many Times' is the jump off and then I've got some serious jams coming!"

Could an EP/album potentially be in the works as well?

"100%! I'm thinking that'll be ready next year!"

Last but not least, do you have a message for everyone who supports you?

"I wouldn't be where I am without the support of my fans, so I owe you everything! This year will be a big one, that's for sure!"

'How Many Times' is out now and is available to purchase and stream through all major music purchasing and streaming outlets.
