Big Black Delta | Canary

Big Black Delta had released his new track 'Canary' - a contrast to other recent tracks. The song is a fluorescent burst of synth sounds concocted with psychedelic overtones. It merges the intricate dance fuel of Daft Punk with undercurrents of Nine Inch Nails’ ominous menace.

The inspiration for 'Canary' comes from a heavy blend of Big Black Delta's synethesisa, a nostalgic flashback from the past and his now multifaceted artistry.

He explains:

"In elementary school in Miami, all the kids would meet on the playground before school started. Groups of mostly girls, and a few brave boys, would do stomp/clap routines and compete with each other. Even then when I closed my eyes I saw crazy lights, colours and shapes to their routines. Now that I’m older and have the ability, I made a song that does that, times a million. With headphones, if I could show what I see, you’d get sunburned. In Sammy Hagar terms."

The song’s lyrics offer a maelstrom of moods. There’s undoubtedly elements of panic and despair in its enigmatic words, but the elevated mood of the second verse suggests a brighter outcome.

His aptly named 4th upcoming album ‘4’ is shaping up to be sonically eclectic and emotionally tumultuous, it’s no surprise that it was the product of a troubled chapter in Big Black Delta’s life. The Mellowdrone frontman and M83 collaborator, real name Jonathan Bates, sunk into the vortex and was almost submerged.

When his father died, it lead him into a tailspin of alcoholism that lasted for three years. His engagement ended. He went from being a naturally skinny guy to be bloated and unable to function. Going through therapy set him back on the right path, and he also discovered that his father and grandfather had both experienced the same problems with alcohol. The process gave him new perspectives on happiness, resilience and gratefulness. It also meant that he decided to scrap an entire project that he had recorded during his darkest period.

A new surge of creativity was inspired by wanting to help other people find hope and an escape from a never-ending cycle of negativity and pain. The result of which, ‘4’, is about to be shared with the world.
