Garnering over 1 billion worldwide streams, multi-platinum Dutch producer Sam Feldt is most famed for his rework of Robin S’ ‘Show Me Love’ which reached #4 in the UK charts and worldwide hit ‘Post Malone’ ft RANI which amassed over 420 million streams on Spotify alone. Most recently, Sam has teamed up with Australian singer / songwriter Sam Fischer for new single 'Pick Me Up'.
We had the chance to speak with Sam on the new single and more...
Introduce yourself to our readers and tell us a little about you!
"Well hello there readers, my name is Sam Feldt. Most people know me from my hit songs 'Post Malone', 'Show Me Love' and 'Far Away From Home', or my most recent single 'Pick Me Up' with Sam Fischer. Outside of being an artist, I am also an entrepreneur and philantrophist, through Fangage and the Heartfeldt Foundation."
How is 2021 treating you so far?
"The year's been great so far actually. I've had two big singles come out, with Kesha and Sam Fischer, and Heartfeldt Records (my record label) is doing really well too. Touring seems to be coming back soon, and on top of all that my company Fangage just raised $2.5m in funding. Busy times, but only positive things happening."
How would you describe your sound in the form of a hashtag?
"#Uplifting"
You’ve just released your new track ‘Pick Me Up’ with Sam Fischer. How has the reaction been so far?
"Overwhelming, but in a good way! Both Sam Fischer and myself never expected the song to get this big, so fast. The track reached over 5 million streams on Spotify in just two weeks and is climbing the radio charts everywhere, so I'm really happy with the initial response."
Tell us a little about it!
"After being asked to remix Sam Fischer's previous single with Demi Lovato, we stayed in touch and decided to start working on an original collaboration. I've been a big fan of Sam Fischer's voice ever since he released his debut single and when he sent me the rough idea for 'Pick Me Up' I fell in love immediately. The production process went really quickly, hence the release shortly after the remix collab. We enlisted the help of the Sam Feldt Live Band to record some real horns as the instrumental lead of the track and boom, 'Pick Me Up' was born."
How was working with Sam on the release? Did you have to work remotely or did you manage to work in person?
"Unfortunately due to the pandemic we haven't been able to meet just yet. We were planning on filming the music video together but due to travel restrictions we haven't been able to so we will be recording it separately. The production process was fully digital, with Sam Fischer working from his studio in LA and myself and the band here in Amsterdam."
Over the years, you’ve worked with several artists on collaborations as well as remixed tracks for others. Do you have a particular stand out collaboration or one that went in a different way than you originally planned?
"All of these collabs usually go a little different than planned. When the idea for 'Pick Me Up' was born, for example, there weren't any horns in the track at all. In the final version, they carry a big part of the song. For my previous single 'Stronger' with Kesha, I was surprised by her liking to hard-hitting EDM sounds like the acid-house bassline in the drop of the song. In general, I love doing unexpected collabs because they often lead to the most interesting end results."
You’ve played massive stages and clubs such as Tomorrowland, Ultra, Coachella and Creamfields. What’s your favourite place to play live and what would be your dream venue?
"For me, Coachella is my all-time favorite. I love the festival as a visitor too, and to be asked as a DJ to play in between all these massive pop and rock acts is just a special feeling. Looking towards the future, I'd love to host my own Heartfeldt stages at big festivals world wide (pool party at a festival, anyone?)"
Finally, what else can be expected from you this year?
"I've just finished the follow-up single to 'Pick Me Up', which I am really happy with. I am also working on about ±20 other songs, so lots of Sam Feldt music on the shelves and coming up. On the business side, Fangage.com is rapidly expanding and we're hiring a great team which is going to help us liberate even more artists and creators in the rest of the year to come. Exciting times!"
