Get To Know | Becky CJ

South London-based queer artist Becky CJ has unveiled her new evocative single 'I Think I'm In Love With My Best Friend'.

Laced with calming piano keys, the single dwells in glimmering melancholia to produce a track journeying through intimacy, sexuality and desire. Delving into the depths of vulnerability, the single unravels itself into a heartfelt ballad about succumbing to the heightened feelings of wanting to become more than friends.

Effortlessly drawing upon the raw emotions of romantic love, 'I Think I'm In Love With My Best Friend' layers honest lyricism upon a transcendent piano melody and irresistable harmonies to showcase Becky's unparalleled artristry. With her ingenious songwriting talents, the track amounts to a whimsical flourish of gentle yet flawless pop magic.

With each new release, Becky's musical trajectory is thriving. Her forthcoming EP 'Woman', out April 15th, looks into coming to terms with your own sexuality. If there ever was a time to admire the work of this incredible artist, now would very much be the right time.

We had the chance to speak to Becky on the release and more as part of our Get to Know series...

Where are you from and what’s your favourite thing about the place?

"I’m from London! I was born South and have kind of always just stayed here. I love how multi cultural South London is, the most incredible food from all corners of the world is on your doorstep and that to me, is a must have."

Who are your biggest inspirations, musically?

"My favourite inspirations are Susanne Sundfør, James Blake, Frank Ocean, Alison Krauss and Regina Spektor."

How would you describe your sound in the form of a hashtag?

"#emotional haha"

Who would be your dream collaboration?

"100% James Blake!!!"

What’s been your stand out moment so far?

"I think having 7.5 million people watch a video of me singing a Tinder conversation on TikTok is definitely a stand out."

You recently released your new single ‘I Think I’m In Love With My Best Friend’! How has the reaction been so far?

"It’s been incredible! I was so happy that Wonderland decided to the premiere the single and since then I have had so many people reaching out saying the song has really connected to them. I am so relieved this song is out there because it was such an emotional one for me and I have been sitting on it for 2 years waiting for the right moment."

Tell us a little about it!

"So I wrote the song on my own in room 2 years ago. I was in the middle of a complicated relationship where I’d realised I was in love with my best friend and I was finding it frankly, overwhelming. I wrote this in one sitting, through a lot of tears and recorded a demo for it there and then. The final track is pretty much the same as the original demo just slightly cleaned up, vocals, lots of layered backing vocals and piano. I worked with my producer Olly remotely, recording the vocals and piano at home and he sprinkled his magic production dust on top."

What is the story behind the lyrics?

"The story is essentially me writing in my diary about my feelings for my best friend. I go through the notions of saying how I feel out loud, imagining how it may ruin our friendship, day dreaming about how I might tell her, to ending on deciding I’m not quite there yet and need to keep it to myself a little bit longer. It’s practically just verbatim how I felt which is why the song is so personal and quite an emotional one to release!"

What can we expect from you for the rest of this year?

"I am releasing my EP ‘Woman’ on the 15th April which is made up of this single, plus 'Losing Your Perspective' and then 2 more, new songs. I am so excited to have this out in the world!"
