Get To Know | Dana Williams

Dana Williams released her latest single 'Knife' earlier this week. Singing about the ‘happiest day of her life'.

Dana says:

“I wrote this song about breaking free from a toxic situation. I was experiencing such joy and creativity with this feeling of newly found freedom. The satisfaction of cutting ties can be like using a perfectly sharpened knife to a cook.”

'Knife' is so-produced by Jordan Ware and L.3.G.I.O.N. who collaborated with Williams on her previous single 'underwater', which was featured in the past season of Hulu’s Ramy.

Dana was recently a guest performer on H.E.R.'s Girls With Guitars IG Live show - with other guests including Lianne La Havas, Sheryl Crow, Melissa Etheridge, Chloe x Halle, Willow Smith, Allesia Cara and more.

We got the opportunity to chat with Dana on the new release and got to know her a little better...

Hey Dana! Welcome to The Lowdown! Where are you from?

"I'm from LA, but I moved around a lot so I grew up in LA and also NYC."

When did you know you wanted a career in music?

"My dad was a musician so music was already around. I always knew I wanted to be a musician, I just didn't know to what capacity. I've always loved writing songs and singing, but was always very shy, so I wasn't sure if I would be a performer."

Who’s your biggest influence/influences, musically and in life?

"My biggest influence musically and in life would probably be my dad. He was the first musician who inspired me and also encouraged me to be a musician. He taught me how to write songs and it was something we did together."

What would be your ‘dream come true’?

"I think my biggest dream come true is pretty simple. Like most artists, it's a dream come true any day that I am able to practice my art. The dream is to be able to continue to make my art."

How would you describe your music style in a sentence?

"I would say my music style is Alt R&B or Folky Soul."

Have you had a particular stand out moment so far in your career?

"There are so many highs and lows as an artist. I'm grateful for the moments where I am able to connect with people."

Your new single ‘Knife’ was released earlier this week. Tell us a little about the track!

"'Knife' is about breaking free from a toxic relationship and the feeling of joy and creativity that is born out of that freedom."

You shot the accompanying music video whilst in isolation. How did that differ to your usual video shoots?

"Shooting in isolation is different from shooting in the old world because you have to do everything remotely on your own. I don't mind it so much. It's a new opportunity to be creative and find myself visually."

Do you have a favourite lyric from ‘Knife’?

"I like the lyrics of the chorus."

"It was the happiest day of my life, just like the perfectly sharpened blade of a knife".

What can we expect from you for the rest of this year and going into 2021?

"I'm really looking forward to continuing releasing new music and videos."
