Get To Know | Devin Kennedy

Singer, songwriter and producer Devin Kennedy has just released his new single 'Mean To Me' where he teamed up with Whakaio Taahi to produce this timepiece featuring Caroline Kole.

On the release, Caroline stated,

“Our paths crossed earlier last year and we knew we wanted to collaborate in some way. Though we couldn’t be in the same room together to record this, FaceTime closed the gap between LA and Nashville. So excited to kick of 2021 this way, and anxiously awaiting the day we can play it live in front of actual people.”

We had a chat with Devin Kennedy on the new release as part of our Get To Know series...

Introduce yourself and tell us a bit about you! "Hey I'm Devin, I'm 24, and I've been making music since I was a kid."

Where are you from and what’s your favourite thing about the place? "I'm from Los Angeles born and raised. My favorite thing about LA is that I'm surrounded by so many crazy talented people and it drives me to work super hard on my music." What’s your earliest musical memory? "My earliest musical memory is getting a drumset for Christmas when I was 2 years old. My dad and I used to jam out all the time growing up."

Who are your biggest inspirations? "John Mayer, Jon Bellion, Lauv & many more" How would you describe your sound in the form of a hashtag? "#CaliforniaSadPop" What’s been your stand out moment so far? "It's been an extremely busy and exciting last few years, but one of my stand out moments as an artist was performing live on Elvis Duran's "Stay at Home Ball" last year. Not only did it benefit Project Cure supporting our healthcare workers during the global pandemic, which is SO important, but I also had the opportunity to play alongside some of my favourite artists." You’ve just released your new track ‘Mean To Me’! Tell us a little about it! "I'm so excited to have this song out! I wrote it during the summer last year with my friends Whakaio & Scars and we knew we had something special right away."

It features Caroline Kole! How was working with her on the collaboration? "Caroline is so awesome and I'm so excited to have her on the song. We met in early 2020 and knew it was only a matter of time until we found a way to collab on something." What’s your favourite lyric from the track? "I think "Everytime I lose my head, my enemies are make-believe" sums this track up pretty well."

What are your plans for 2021? "Lot's of new music! Should be an exciting year!"
