Fun, edgy and uplifting, London based brothers FOUNDRY13 have returned with their latest single ‘Wild // Child’ and it is not to be missed.

Blending together genres from alt-pop, rock and even a splash of punk, FOUNDRY13 have nestled into their own intricate brand of feel-good music that you can’t help but play on repeat. Taking a playful, lighthearted approach to their lyricism, ‘Wild // Child’ is the perfect track for summer 2021, with the single marking a stellar return for the band.

Since making their debut back in 2019, FOUNDRY13 have quickly garnered ample industry attention going from strength to strength whilst building a solid reputation for great music. Since arriving on the scene, the pair have expertly crafted a novel new sound that blends dark pop undertones with hip hop beats and a distinct rock vibe. Reminiscent of artists such as Grouplove and Twenty One Pilots with touches of influence from older bands like The Clash and The Smiths, FOUNDRY13 brings to light an impressive vibe that fans all over the world are beginning to clamour for.

We had the chance to speak with the duo as part of our Get to Know series...

Introduce yourselves and tell us a bit about you guys!

"Hey! We’re FOUNDRY13, an alt-pop-rock band from the outskirts of London. We self-write, produce, master and create all of our own content from the music to the artwork."

When did you start making music together?

James: "We’ve always been passionate about making music and art in one way or another. We come from a very artistic family and so we’ve always made music together at home whenever we possibly could, but never in the same band until the last couple of years."

Is there a story or meaning behind the band name?

Joshi: "Yes there is! It’s pretty much the birthplace of everything. Foundry was the street we lived down when creating the band, and was also the place we made lots of our music. It was where we learned everything. The number thirteen just seems to be a lucky number for us, it’s kind of weird to be honest, the number thirteen just seems right. A lot of good things have happened in the presence of thirteen for us."

Where are you from and what’s your favourite thing about it? Do you feel as though your surroundings have inspired your sound in any way?

James: "We’re from a small village based in Colchester in Essex. I think the best aspect about it is that it is right in the country which is great for us. If we’re not making music or art, we're skateboarding, paddle boarding, kayaking, cliff jumping, surfing, skating...the list goes on. I don’t think our hometown has inspired us musically, except from the fact that it sculpted us as people. But musically, we are always in London, so the scene there is what made us fall in love with music styles, fashion, art e.t.c. Our parents were also the main inspiration in our youth and still today, after all, they bought us our first instruments which allowed us to become who we are today."

Who are your biggest inspirations, musically?

Joshi: "I don’t think we have any artists as inspirations to be honest. Sure, we get inspired by a certain track or artwork e.t.c but we are more inspired by the environments we find ourselves in. We also become inspired by literally anything and anyone. Inspiration isn’t a constant, it’s more of a variable in which anything can spark the flame inside you, and we love that!"

Who would be your dream artist or group to collaborate with?

James: "That’s a tough one...There are so many up and coming artists which we absolutely love, two being BLESSED and Jean Dawson, who are both so unique in their own ways. We would love to collaborate with them on a creative level of some sorts."

You recently released your new single ‘Wild // Child’! How has the reaction been so far?

James: "We couldn’t be more happy with the reaction to 'Wild // Child' so far, and we know that it’s just started. The support we’ve received so far is incredible and we love hearing our communities thoughts and reactions to it. That’s literally why we do music."

Tell us a little about what inspired the track and lyrics!

Joshi: "We usually address quite heavy topics in our music such as dealing with depression, anxiety, mental health, amongst others. As we’ve just come out of a global pandemic in which everyone had their own hardships and tough situations to deal with, we felt as though a fun and vibey anthem was the perfect track to help people smile. 'Wild // Child' is all about never wanting the party to end and living the best life you possibly can."

Do you have a favourite lyric in particular from the release?

Joshi: "I think the line “Feeling woozy, vertigo, camera shy, yet super bold” sums me up completely. have ADHD so “feeling woozy” and “vertigo” is my life in a nutshell, but it’s great for the creative aspect of music...which is the whole thing. The “camera shy, yet super bold” line is kind of a juxtaposition for how I’m sort of an introverted extrovert. I overthink a lot and can get anxious about a lot of things, but when it comes down to it, I’m super extroverted and never want the moment to end. It’s hilarious."

Can we expect any live shows coming soon now that restrictions have been lifted?

James: "Yes! 1000% yes! We’ve actually just performed for BBC Introducing the other week and are planning more very soon! It’s been such a long wait for everyone and being able to see the light at the end of the tunnel is such a great feeling. This whole time during the pandemic, we’ve just been writing, creating, producing, and setting things up for when the ball starts rolling again. As we live under the same roof, we were able to keep music going all the way through COVID, we also create everything ourselves, down to the artwork and mastering of the tracks, so it helped us out a lot this year. We can’t wait for what’s to come!"

What’s coming next for you guys?

Joshi: "A lot! It’s almost making us insane with the amount we have planned! We want to start performing a lot more shows for everyone as well as create content on a whole new level. We keep everyone updated on what we are up to, as well as big things coming up on our socials, so make sure to follow us if you want to keep up to date."
