Get To Know | From, Tom

Tom McGeoch, artist name From, Tom, has released his third single 'Someone'.

Tom McGeoch didn't give himself much credit after winning a poetry contest in college. He thought he was just a drummer from Columbus, Ohio. He didn't think of himself as a songwriter or artist even though he wrote plenty of original songs.

After graduating from Berklee College of Music, Tom packed everything he could fit into a Honda Civic and drove across the country to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music. Despite playing and recording drums for many artists, Tom felt that he had more to give. He realised that he was, in fact, meant to be a songwriter and artist. He knew it was time to break out of the mental box he put himself in and expand his passion for music to this endeavor.

His artist name is derived from the poetry and letters that Tom has written over the last several years. A process he has continued to practice everyday. From, Tom is completely raw and unfiltered. His music communicates the more difficult aspects of life in a refreshing and unique way. These songs are an honest reflection of who Tom actually is.

On the days following his new release, we had the chance to chat with Tom as part of our Get to Know series...

Introduce yourself and tell us a bit about you!

"Yo! My name is Tom McGeoch and I’m a multi-instrumentalist and recording artist based out of Los Angeles. I started out as a session/touring drummer and went on to graduate from Berklee College of Music. I have my own artist project now that I sing for called From, Tom."

Where are you from and what’s your favourite thing about the place? "I was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio. I’m a big soccer fan so my favorite thing about Columbus has to be the fact that the Columbus Crew (MLS team) is located there. The Crew won the 2020 MLS Cup so if you’re looking for an MLS team to support, The Crew should be your top choice. I live in Los Angeles, California now and really miss going to Crew games. I try to catch them each time they play away games out here in California though." How did you get into music? "My parents were always playing music around the house and on road trips growing up. We had a piano in the living room too. I can’t answer this question without giving credit to my friend Collin though. We became friends at a young age and his dad had a drum kit. He let me sit behind the drums and mess around and I fell in love with drumming."

Who are your biggest inspirations musically? "I really loved the newest album from The Weeknd. He definitely inspires me. There’s a band called The Story So Far that I also really love. I love listening to a ton of different music but those two really stand out for me." How would you describe your sound in the form of a hashtag? "#EnergeticReflection
" Who would be your dream collaboration? "I’d love to work on a track with John Mayer. I should put that on my vision board." You’ve just released your new track ‘Someone’! Tell us a little about it! "Yeah! I’m so excited about it. I was just messing around producing this new song in my bedroom. I came up with a short little clip of this ambient guitar and latin style beat and I sent it to my friend/co-producer Kyle Kanzigg. He thought it was cool so he brought on his friend Matt Huber to work on it with him. I brought on my friend Lydia Kaseta as well to help write the lyrics and melody too. She’s an absolute powerhouse of a singer and writer so it was incredible to work with her." Is there a story behind the lyrics? "'Someone' is about loving someone who just isn’t the right person for you. I think you can definitely love another person and simultaneously discover that it’s just not meant to be. This song is all about accepting that and being okay with it." What’s your favourite lyric from the track? "My favorite lyric from the track is probably “it ain’t like in the movies, where she comes back and falls into your arms”. I was thinking about The Notebook when Lydia and I came up with that line. That movie has always stuck out to me because it’s so moving. I’m a sucker for romance movies and rom-coms."

What are your plans for the rest of 2021? "You can expect a new single from me about every 8 weeks or so. I’m constantly working on new songs! Hopefully seeing my family later this year too! It’s been over a year since I’ve seen my brothers and I haven’t met my nephew yet so that’s something I’m looking forward to."
