Get To Know | Gilligan Moss

Chicago bred, Brooklyn based electronic duo Gilligan Moss kick off 2021 with new single and video ‘Slow Down', which will feature on their forthcoming self-titled debut album, due for release on April 9th on Foreign Family Collective.

Combining carefree vocals, warm instrumentation and the most infectious of basslines, ‘Slow Down’ is a fresh, feel good nu-disco / house jam that’s been crafted for an eternal summer.

“As The Eagles say, take it easy, ‘Slow Down’ is a song of universal feeling; it’s driving 5 mph with the windows down, enjoying the crumbled oreos at the bottom of a milkshake. We wrote this while we were decamped at GilMo HQ and if you listen closely, you can hear Merle the dog singing along too. Wash, rinse, repeat.”

Accompanying the track is the official music video, directed by Italian claymation artist and set designer Francesca More. It features Gilligan Moss performing ‘Slow Down’ in claymation as they morph into different versions of themselves, in the sea as octopuses, in their natural element outdoors, in the club, as children, and in outer space. The duo is observed by an older gentleman who glides through each scene effortlessly via skateboard, picking up elements from the guys surroundings adding color and joy to his own life.

We had a chat with Gilligan Moss on the new release and more as part of our Get to Know series...

Hey guys! Introduce yourselves and tell us a little about you!

"Hey! I’m Evan! And I’m Ben! We make music as Gilligan Moss. Nice to meet you :)"

Where are you from? Do you feel your surroundings have impacted your sound at all?

"We are from Chicago, IL. Our surroundings definitely impact our sound. This record was made in a sunny little house in upstate NY. We’ve definitely channeled that energy into this record."

How did you meet and when did you start making music together?

"We met in preschool. We started making music shortly thereafter."

What’s the story behind the name?

"Gilligan Moss was our pre school karate teacher. Shoutout sensei Moss."

If you had to sum up your sound in 5 words or less, what would you say?

"Psychedelic pickle step."

Who would be your dream collaboration?

"Brian Eno."

Over the years, you’ve played major festivals, toured with several other artists and released a 13-track mix for Adventure Time: Distant Lands. Do you have a stand out moment?

"Coachella is an immediate standout. Our first ever tour was opening for Glass Animals, that tour will forever hold a special place for us. Hopefully lots more standout moments to come."

You’ve just released your new single ‘Slow Down’. How has the reaction been so far?

"It’s been great! Someone at a radio station said it was the most conventional song of ours they’d heard- which I think is a nice compliment!"

Tell us a little bit about the visuals that accompany the track!

"The claymation was done by Francesca Morea, who is an absolute visionary. She is an amazing

director from Italy. It was a blast to make- we’d send her scene ideas and photo references (like a photo of the actual preschool we went to) and she’d recreate everything inch perfect. There are Easter eggs throughout for the hardcore GM fans."

The single comes along with the announcement of your debut album which will be released in April. Could you tell us a bit about what can be expected?

"We set out to make an album that feels like some of our favorite 70s albums. Warm, hifidelity, cohesive- I think we landed pretty close to that. It’s 13 songs, we kept it pretty in house- both of our partners are on the record, our dogs barking, friends’ voicemails- it’s definitely a family affair."

What else do you have in store for 2021?

"Who knows! Hopefully touring later in the year, we’re excited to get these songs in front of an audience!"

With another infectious single under their belt and a debut album on the way, 2021 is primed to be a career-defining year for Gilligan Moss.
