We recently had the opportunity to speak with Jack Devlin about how he first got into music, his musical influences and much more. Keep reading to check out what he had to say!

Welcome to The Lowdown! Please introduce yourself to our readers.

"I am Jack Devlin. I am a singer and song-writer/messer!"

Going back to your roots, how did you first get into music?

"I started getting into music through trying to bunk class. My Mum has always been interested in music, and my Dad strummed a little bit of guitar, but not too much, and then there were guitar lessons in school. I never sang until I was in fifth year, because I had to make a composition and then sing to my teacher. She was like: 'You can sing!' and I was like: 'No, no - I can't sing!,' but here we are - apparently I can sing!

I started off busking and built from there. I only really started this project properly during lockdown. We did an Irish busking tour. It has now went on to gigging, and I love live music myself. Performing live is a very important part of my journey."

Who do you derive musical inspiration from?

"Lots of newer and older stuff. I always reference Jeff Buckley. There's also newer bands, such as Nothing But Thieves and even Kings Of Leon. It's like an indie/rock/folk sound. I also listen to Bob Dylan. There's a big mix. I'll be listening to Rage Against The Machine and then ABBA back-to-back."

Do you feel that such artists have a direct bearing on your own music?

"For sure! I've got so many songs that nobody will probably ever hear, because it's not exactly what Jack Devlin is essentially. I'll find that if I'm listening to a lot of LCD Soundsystem, I'll start making whacky tracks. Some things influence me more for different reasons lyrically. I'll listen to things more intently. I always try and pick a reference that I want to be around. I have a playlist of all my references that I would listen to."

What has been the highlight for you in your music career so far?

"There's been lots of cool things that have happened recently. I ended up writing a song with Steve Garrigan from Kodaline. It was just through Zoom, but I was totally starstruck! We did a tour there recently with Dea Matrona. We got to play venues I've wanted to play for years. Even though it was just a support slot, it was super cool!"

If you were to sum up your sound in a couple of words, what would they be?

"This is a very hard one! With the way I approach music, it doesn't have any set theme. I started writing music because it was what I wanted to do. I never thought I was going to be a song-writer. I was actually trying to be a mountain biker. I do music because I love it. My music is a wraparound all the emotions of life. As far as topics go, it's just the overall topic of life."

What does the remainder of the year have in store for you?

"I'm going quiet until I get new music out, and then I'll do another headline show. There'll be a bit of busking and the odd support show."
