Here at The Lowdown, we love introducing our readers to new, up and coming talent that we highly recommend checking out. In this article, we introduce you to Brussels-born, now London-based multidisciplinary artist MEYY. Following her bursting onto the music scene in 2019 with her debut single 'Angelic Lies,' she has gone from strength to strength, and won Red Bull's Elektropedia award for 'Most Promising Artist Of 2021' - a fantastic accolade! There's certainly plenty more to come from MEYY and we can't wait to hear even more from her!
The Lowdown had the opportunity to speak with MEYY about her new single 'Hyli,' her biggest musical inspirations, what can be expected from her upcoming EP and more. Keep reading to check out what she had to say!
Please introduce yourself and tell us a bit about yourself!
"My name is MEYY. I'm twenty years old. I make music that floats somewhere between new-time R&B and electronic bedroom pop. I love making dreamy and lush songs that stimulate people's imagination and emotions. Besides music, I also study Civil Engineering at the University of Technology Delft. I love hanging out with my friends in pretty sceneries."
When did you start making music?
"There wasn't really a moment when it started. I've been singing and making up melodies in my head for as long as I can remember - it was just always there! The first real song that I wrote, though, was for the anniversary of my grandparents. I was eleven years old. I sang it at their party with my guitar. It was such a cute song - I still remember the chorus!"
Where are you from and what's your favourite thing about it?
"I'm based in London now, but I'm from Brussels. My favourite part about my hometown is the transparency and the openness. Brussels is such a receptive city. There's also a real feeling of community, which creates a super cool scene in any branch of the arts. It makes them flourish so beautifully. London stole my heart as well. When I came over for writing sessions earlier this year, I fell in love and decided to make the move only a couple of months later. I also feel like my music resonates better in the UK. I can't wait to share it live in a cosy, dark club and to vibe with you!"
Who are the biggest inspirations for your own sound?
"FKA Twigs, Rosalía, Ariana Grande, Abra, 070 Shake, Charlie XCX, AG Cook, Mike Dean, Kanye West and The Weeknd."
Who would be your dream artist to collaborate with?
"FKA Twigs and Kanye West."
Where would be your dream venue to play?
"Madison Square Garden."
Have you had a particular stand-out moment so far?
"Winning the Red Bull Elektropedia's 'Most Promising Artist' award. I think that was the first time I realised that there were actually people who listen to my music and want to hear more."
You've just released your brand new track 'Hyli.' How has the reaction been?
"The reaction has been so so good! I'm so happy because I really feel like 'Hyli' fully embodies the musical universe that I picture in my head and want to create in this world."
Tell us a little about the track.
"I wrote 'Hyli' on a breezy summer night when I was hanging out with my friend/producer on his terrace. He made the beat and put it on loop and then I wrote the topline. That is also why I love the song so much, as it has a certain nonchalance to it, reflecting that moment in which it was created, which I think makes the song so hot! This expression has really lost all of its coolness, but I'm going to use it anyway...it was such 'a vibe!'"
For anyone who hasn't heard the track yet, how would you sum it up in a sentence?
"A lushy song over a hot underwater-like production."
The single come alongside the exciting announcement of your forthcoming EP, 'Neon Angel.' Can you give us any hints as to what can be expected from that?
"'New Angel' is going to be a collection of four hot tracks. When it comes to the sound, I think there is a certain duality in the songs. Two of them are more progressive than the others. All four of them are still very 'MEYY.' It shows both sides of the musical realm I'm in. On one side, I love making weird, textured and layered music, because I feel like it's super interesting to make and to listen to those type of songs. This type of music also creates more space for freedom, which is where music lives best I think. On the other hand, I also love making songs you can just vibe to - tracks or soundscapes with a cool (and often sexy) aesthetic and smooth topline. This EP embodies both sides perfectly. I can really say that I love every single track on there. I'm so excited to release them! 'Neon Angel' will have a couple of very exciting features, but that's still a surprise."
What have you got planned for the rest of 2021? Will there be any live shows now that restrictions have been lifted?
"We're planning a release party and concert for the release of 'Neon Angel' this winter in Brussels and London. I'm very excited about that!"
MEYY's new single 'Hyli' is out now and is available to purchase and stream on all major responsible music purchasing and streaming platforms.
