After topping UK Charts with 'Dancing In The Moonlight' with Jübel, peaking at #11 and racking up 160 million streams to date, NEIMY has just released her new single 'LIMBO'.
We had a chat with NEIMY as part of our Get To Know series...
Introduce yourself and tell us a fun fact about you! "I’m a songwriter and my artist project is called NEIMY. My passion is to tell stories with my songs and share with my wonderful listeners. I looove pickles and will eat them with everything!"
Where are you from and do you feel like that place has influenced your sound? I"'m from a small community in Sweden called Nossebro, about one hour from Gothenburg . I actually don’t know how exactly Sweden has influenced my sound but I’m definitely sure that the musical culture we have here has played a big part of it."
How would you sum up your music style in the form of a hashtag? "Wow okay here it goes #upbeatchillpopwithindietouch"
Who are your biggest inspirations, musically? "I love Sigrid, BENE, MØ and Bob Dylan."
What’s your earliest musical memory? "When I was about three years old my mother was playing the guitar and had a plugged in sound system in our living room and I had a microphone and was just improvising lyrics. I remember how fun it was to hear my voice from the speaker ha ha."
Who would be your dream collaboration? "Hmm so many good ones, I really like clean bandit! I love their blend between electronic sound and organic strings!"
You’ve has success in the UK with ‘Dancing In The Moonlight’. How did it feel when you found out you’d hit the charts? "I still can’t get comprehend it. It was the third most played song on the radio, here in Sweden when it was released, back in 2018. I thought well that was that and it was awesome but to see it continuing to spread and hit the UK charts 2 years after the release was just mind blowing!"
You’ve just released your new track ‘LIMBO’. Tell us a bit about it! (writing, recording, inspirations) "This song came about at a speed writing session with me and my cowriter and producer Eric Wictor. Within an hour we had the whole topline and the lyrics poured out of me. The process was very smooth and alot of vibe, we didn't overthink the song and I think that's why it turned out so great. It's a pop song with few elements and a nice, simple groove. The production contains acoustic guitars, samples and synths. The lyrics are dark and playful with a glimpse of humor and sarcasm."
Is there a story behind the lyrics? "Yeah there’s always a story in my songs. Usually it’s not just about one thing, but it can be a lot of different emotions turned into one. This song is the story of being trapped in a LIMBO and that hopeless feeling that comes with not being able to do anything about it. That’s definitely how I have felt at times this year, I think the whole world is bleeding in so many ways so weather it’s a toxic relation ship, COVID-19 or just your own mind I hope it’s relatable."
Do you have a favourite lyric from the track?
“I’m in your limbo, you got your claws deep in my skin, you’ll never let me go and I know I’ll never win”
What are your plans for 2021 so far? "My EP will be out and the first single will be released in January, hopefully. It includes three songs that although they sound happy and are uptempo it’s also a lot of deep tough emotions personally from me. I can’t wait to show it!"
