Jonathan Roy is a Canadian born solo artist who is taking the world by storm with his contemplative anthems.
He is gearing up for the release of new music, and so we thought that now would be the perfect time for you guys to get to know the rising star.
You have just released an incredible cover version of ‘Delicate’ by Damian Rice. Why this song?
"I have always admired Damien Rice and listened to his music early on in my career. I never thought to cover one of his songs until my friend Paul mentioned that he heard it on the Netflix show 'Money Heist' and I should give it a shot! It’s a beautiful song and I hope I gave the song justice."
Did you enjoy the challenge of covering such a well-known track?
"I really enjoy learning well-crafted songs and making them my own."
You are gearing up for the release of new music. Is it music to dance to or music to cry to?
"I guess I'd have to say its dark uplifting music! You can cry, dance and do whatever it makes you feel."
What is your favourite thing about the new material, and why?
"My lyrics and melodies. Loving the subjects and words that we’ve chosen throughout the songs."
And are you trying out anything new?
"This time around for the new recording we seemed to have organically moved towards having full produced versions of songs accompanied with an acoustic version."
What really gets you going during the writing process?
"Good vibes! When we are all flowing and loving the idea for a song. The writing process is awesome when teaming up."
Is your music your sole focus? Or do you have other things going on?
"I love the outdoors! So I try and blend the two as much as possible. Lots of exploring, rock climbing, hiking, etc. Love travelling with my RV."
What is your greatest fan moment to date?
"That would have to be in my hometown of Quebec playing in front of 60,000 people and hearing them sing me back my single at the time! One of the craziest and greatest moments of my life with my fans!"
And as a musician, what is still on your bucket list?
"I want to travel the world with my music and play in as many countries as I can."
With live music facing an uncertain future, how have you been preparing for a world with no live shows?
"Not happening! We will find a way."
