The reaction to JONES' recent single 'Giving It Up' has seen the rising newcomer from London shaping up to be the UK's next breakthrough artist with airplay from Radio 1, Radio 2 & Capital XTRA alongside playlisting from Spotify, Apple & Deezer.
JONES has raised the game with brand new single 'Camera Flash'. That irresistible vocal gift again takes centre stage as it oozes power, control and pure feeling. Yet it’s a thoroughly different vibe to ‘Giving It Up’, with soaring disco synths, pulsating electro-pop and sparkling flashbacks to the 90s R&B golden era.
Lyrically it’s an empowered statement from an artist who knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to say so. It’s a topic that so many people will be able to relate to: wanting a relationship when everyone seems to be craving a casual connection.
JONES commented,
“As a woman, especially in my late teens and early twenties, I met guys that I guess just wanted an easy, disposable thing and I was frustrated with that. I see the value in getting to know someone and I've always been more of a relationship person.”
We thought it would be a great time to speak to JONES' as part of our Get To Know series...
Please introduce yourself to our readers and tell us something about yourself! "I'm a singer/songwriter from London, I make Soul/Pop music. I enjoy learning about nutrition, practicing yoga and reading Japanese fiction when I'm not doing music things." Where are you from? "East London born and raised." When did you start thinking about a career in music? "As long as I can remember this has been my ambition, I guess it started out as a child-like fairytale dream but then it just never left me so my whole life has been focused on pursuing music and developing my writing. I think I was singing from the age of 5 or 6..." Who are you listening to at the minute? Is there a particular track that's stuck in your head? "Honestly - I keep waking up with Harry Styles - Watermelon Sugar in my head whether I want it to be there or not!" Can you sum up the world of JONES in 5 words? "introspective, analytical, emotion, curious, learning." Who or what would you say is your biggest motivation? "I'd say that my biggest motivation is conquering fears that's always been a big driving force in my life. Overcoming adversity, and then sharing that process with others, it's important to feel that you are a positive force in the world too." What would be your dream venue or place to play?
"There's not a particular famous venue but more a certain type - I'd love to play a massive amphitheatre show some time I think that would feel quite magical..."
What social media platform are you using most currently? "It's predominantly Instagram, that's the one I'm most familiar with and can use quite naturally. I think that being across all of them consistently can be quite draining and a lot to keep up with." What’s your favourite memory been so far in your music career? "My favourite memory is definitely playing Live With Jools Holland, it was a TV show I watched growing up as a kid and it just felt so surreal and was a "i need to pinch myself" sort of moment."
Your track ‘Giving It Up’ was added to many influential playlists including Spotify’s New Music Friday. Have you discovered any artists by checking out this sort of playlist before? "Definitely - I found Arlo Park's - Eugene (which I love) through one of those and then also Bakar - Hell N Back. I listen to these playlists when I'm looking for inspo or just want to find some new music they're great." The track has now had hundreds of thousands of streams across platforms. How has the reaction been? "I'm super happy and thankful with the reaction, it's great to be able to share what I've been quietly working on and get a positive response back. It's just stage one of this new batch of music..." What’s coming up next for you? "I have the next single and video coming 7th August so very excited for that and then I had wanted to play some shows this summer but I'm still waiting to see when that will be possible after everything with coronavirus - hopefully end of the year/start of the new year!"
