Get To Know | junodream

Over the course of three independently released EP's, junodream have earned airplay from Radio 1, Radio X and BBC Introducing Hot List for their previous single 'easy life' alongside numerous tips from key new music champions. The 5-piece have started to add to their tally of 5 million streams by kickstarting 2021 with new single 'Eden Burns' - it looks set to be their biggest year yet.

Inspired by the likes of Radiohead, Blur and Coldplay, 'Eden Burns' demonstrates that their sound continues to evolve in unexpected directions. It stirs elements of angular post-punk energy, anxious rhythms and a cinematic scale hook into their already sprawling array of influences such as Alvvays, King Krule and Joy Division. Ed Vyvyan’s vocals are also utterly distinctive as he contrasts a stuttering staccato with full-voiced melody.

We had a chat with the band as part of our Get To Know series to find out more and talk on the release!

Introduce yourselves and tell us a bit about the band!

"If you’re reading this, nice to meet you, we're Junodream. We play space rock and write about alienation in the 21st century. But don’t worry, our songs are in somewhere in the middle of sad and uplifting. Welcome aboard."

Where are you from and what’s your favourite thing about the place?

"Although all born in different places we spent a lot of our earlier time together in Bristol before succumbing to the big smoke. Bristol’s got a lot going for it, there’s a real community / small city feel and is a great hub for art and music."

How did you meet each other and when did you decide to start making music together?

"We all grew up together and became friends over our shared love of music (some pretty questionable music at the time). After years of being pretty bad we formed and started Junodream in 2018. Only at this point did we go from pretty bad to pretty good (in our eyes at least)."

Is there a story behind the band name?

"An absolute rip. There’s a Pink Floyd b-side ‘Julia Dreams’ and a gorgeous synth called ‘Juno’. We did the tried and tested method of ramming the two together to create Junodream."

Who are your biggest inspirations, musically?

"Our inspirations include the mighty Pink Floyd, Beta Band, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Radiohead, AIR, Zero 7 and many more. We have a few Spotify playlists with a ton of songs we’re inspired by and enjoy. Perhaps head there and *cough cough* follow us on Spotify."

How would you describe your sound in the form of a hashtag?

"#spacerock"

What’s been your stand out moment so far?

"Playing in Hamburg and Netherlands. Our first European shows were huge. Why did we leave?"

You’ve recently released your track ‘Eden Burns’ - tell us a little about it! Is there a story behind the lyrics?

"'Eden Burns' was inspired by the Australian bushfires last year. It’s about the conversation around climate change - whilst it’s great people are speaking about it, actions speak louder than words. We’re all guilty of not doing enough and we’re running out of time."

What’s your favourite lyric from the track?

"A tie between “The worlds on fire, but we’re on an LCD” and “Save your plastic bag and stick your head into it”"

What are your plans for 2021 so far?

"'Eden Burns' is an appetiser for a full on all you can eat Junodream banquet."
