Los Angeles based artist Luka Kloser recently revealed her new single 'Secret Love'. Led by exhilarating pop production that soundtracks her singular vocals, Luka lyrically explores the complexities of an unbalanced romantic relationship through the lens of a spectator.
As she continues to tease her debut EP, we thought it would be a great time to get to know her a little better...
Where are you from?
"I was born in Los Angeles as a first generation American. My mother is from Luxembourg and my father is from Austria, so Europe feels very much like home as well."
When did you start your musical journey?
"My brother and I had to promise our parents that we’d learn an instrument- so I grew up playing piano. Music always played a role in my life early on, but it wasn’t until freshman year of college that I fell in love with songwriting and production."
Who are your biggest inspirations? Are there any particular artists that inspire you to do what you’re doing?
"I’m heavily inspired by ABBA when it comes to shameless pop music. I’m equally inspired by bands like Fleetwood Mac and Toto. There are so many. So many different inspirations for different things. Anderson paak, Kendrick Lamar, Adele, Rihanna, Kate bush, Depeche Mode, Blondie, the list goes on and on. Macy gray’s 'I Try' and Maroon 5’s 'Songs about Jane' will always hold a special place in my heart though.
How would you sum up your sound in one sentence?
"Breakups and baselines."
What’s been your favorite memory so far since starting out?
"Having to convince my dad that it was me singing on my first single 'time'. He had never heard me sing, and it took a lot of convincing."
Your new single ‘Secret Love’ was released last month! How has the reaction been so far?
"It had been over a year since my last song dropped, so it felt very foreign to drop music again. The reaction has been very supportive and positive. It was definitely scary to drop music again, I feel like that will always be the case, but the acceptance of it has been very gratifying."
Tell us a little about it! Is there a story behind the track or anything that inspired it specifically?
"The song was directly inspired by a past relationship. Without saying too much, the song is about an unbalanced romantic relationship that at times felt mutual and at others entirely one sided. Being at the short end of the stick and wishing it was more. Feeling like I was not good enough for someone to take me in fully. Classic inevitable heartbreak."
It’s accompanied by a music video for the track! Tell us a little about the filming process?
"The filming process was difficult because we had a small crew. This was pre covid and that of course made it a lot easier, but we were definitely under crewed. However, the intimacy made it very enjoyable. It felt very improvised at times and I had the pleasure of working with people that made me feel very comfortable on set. We filmed extremely late at night which required extensive lighting set ups and resulted in many bug bites."
It comes before your upcoming debut EP! Can we expect more of the same distinctive sound from the rest of the EP tracks?Â
"I would like to believe that the EP feels cohesive. The soundscape and the overall vibe is similar. There will however be one song in particular that feels very different to what I’ve released thus far."
What are your plans for the rest of the year and into 2021?
"It feels impossible to know what the rest of this year will be like- but I hope I can continue to find moments of creativity amongst the darkness. I feel extremely privileged and lucky to have this outlet to express myself, and that my work can somewhat be fulfilled right now. I hope to be continuously releasing music and I hope to go into 2021 as a smarter, more educated, more inspired artist."
