Interview | DNNY

DNNY released his single 'Bad Side' back in June, and we had the chance to speak to him on the new release. In short: it’s about setting and holding boundaries with an ex, even if it makes you feel like an asshole.  Doing the best to forget them.

He says:

"The song is about an ex who stays in contact with me by appealing to my better nature. They tell me they're lonely and thinking about me, or say how much they miss us being together. At first, I would respond because I felt bad for them and how things ended between us, but then it made me feel disgusted that they still had power over me. As the kind of person I am, I felt like if I just ignored them, it was cruel."

What was the inspiration behind the track?

“I think the inspiration came from a moment of frustration for me. My ex was constantly trying to keep a place in my life, and I was tired of letting them take advantage of my kindness. Enough was enough. We had a thing, and you messed that thing up. Own up to your mistakes and move on.”

Who do you draw influence from for your music?

“Great question!! Mostly from real life stuff. If I am happy, I write happy songs, and if I’m sad, I write sad songs. Sometimes there is that rare spot in between that can be super interesting. Just being human. You never know what you are going to get stepping into a session."

You say 'Pizza' was your first word, what's your go to topping?

"Oh my gosh, don’t get me started, haha. If I had to choose a topping, I would have to go with banana peppers and pepperoni, sometimes I'll throw a little pineapple on there to spice it up (please don’t hate me!)"

If Bad Side was a pizza, what pizza would it be?

“Definitely a deep dish, 'cause there's still a lot of s**t beneath the surface.”

What can we expect next from you?

"I have a lot more music coming out soon that I can’t wait for everybody to hear. Super proud of the work my team and I have put into these songs."
