Introducing | Eph See

Born and bred in Boston, Eph See has been recording and releasing music since they were 17. They've just released their brand new single 'did i?'.

Inspiration from artists like UMI, SZA, Hayley Williams and more, Eph See writes music about heartbreak, healing, joy, and the importance of the little things in life. Music is a method of cathartic release for them; giving them an outlet of expression in times of hardship, and they strive for their music to be an outlet for others too. By embracing their own authenticity and vulnerability, Eph See signals to their audience that it's okay to do the same. With each release, Eph See is adding to the musical paradigm and showing appreciation to the artists they listened to growing up by paying it forward.

We had a chance to speak with Eph See on the release and more...

Introduce yourself and tell us a bit about you!

Hiii! I'm Eph See! I'm a singer-songwriter and producer from Boston. I'm 21 years old and I've been writing songs since I was about 9 or 10. I used to write a lot about love and crushes, but these new songs I've been releasing focus on themes like self-reflection, growth, and learning how to cope with young adulthood. Music is everything to me. It's in everything I do and everything I love.

When did you first develop an interest in making music?

"I've loved music for as long as I can remember. Whenever there was music playing it was a good time. It started with me just listening to the burned CDs that my aunt and my oldest sister would give me. From CDs to iPods to streaming, I've been there trying to find my next favorite song. I also got into performing at school. I was in theater, choir, dance, rock band. Pretty much anything that involved music or singing, I was a part of. When I was 10, I wrote my first real song at a summer camp and performed it with my councilors as my backup vocalists. Then my freshman year of high school, I started writing tons of songs on my guitar and it just kind of took off from there. Now I study music in college and I'm dropping my debut EP in the fall!"

Where are you from and what’s your favourite thing about it? Do you feel as though your surroundings have inspired your sound in any way?

"I'm from Boston, Massachusetts and my favorite thing about it is the changing of the seasons. Boston in the summer is way different than Boston in the winter and that change definitely influences my songwriter. It's also super close to the ocean which I love and I have a lot of family and friends here: my support system."

Who are your biggest inspirations, musically?

"This question is so difficult. I draw inspiration from so many genres and artists. My music is like a quilt of all the music I've listened to. I take my lyrical inspiration from Hayley Williams, SZA, and UMI. I take production inspiration from The 1975, Jon Bellion, and Charlie Puth. And there's artists that I just admire for their genius methods like Jacob Collier, Tyler, the Creator, and Frank Ocean."

Who would be your dream artist to collaborate with?

"The list is so long but if I had to choose one right now it would be Omar Apollo. His song 'Erase' showed up on my discovery playlist back in 2018 and I've been hooked ever since. I love his music. The lyrics, the production, the vibe, everything. He was also the last artist I saw live before the pandemic hit. So yeah, I would be honoured to write with him someday!"

You’ve just released your new single ‘did i?’! How have you found trying to be creative during the pandemic?

"Creating has helped me get through the pandemic like nothing else. In a time where virtually nothing has made sense, it helps me make sense of it. Not even two weeks after the stay-at-home order I wrote and put out 'the things i used to care about seem so stupid now'. This whole EP, "did i?" included, is a result of the isolation and reflection that the pandemic induced. Creating during the pandemic has definitely been a big change, but thanks to modern technology and my friend and producer, LEXIM, I've been able to work that creative muscle pretty consistently and in a way that is very healing for me."

How has the response been so far?

"It's been great! The feedback I've gotten from new fans and old friends is so heartwarming. My favourite thing to hear when people listen to my music is that it makes them feel less alone in what they're feeling. That's exactly what music did and still does for me and that's why I continue to do what I do."

Tell us a little about the track!

"I wrote 'did i?' after a good cry. I was thinking, "why do I always write about love? I've never even been in love." It went on like that for about 20 minutes until I finally asked myself, "did I really want it, or did I just feel like I was supposed to have it?" Then a bird actually started singing outside my window and that's where I got the inspiration for the chorus melody. I called LEXIM and we wrote and produced it right then and there. All in our bedrooms via zoom!"

What’s coming next for you?

"Lots more for sure. I'm releasing my debut EP in the fall which is very exciting for me! Definitely some visual content coming as well. *cough* music video *cough cough*. Definitely stay tuned in for what I have in store for Eph See fans. <3" 'did i?' is out now.
