Introducing | Greywind

Following the success of their acclaimed debut album, Greywind have returned with their new single 'Am I Asleep?'.

Greywind are fast proving themselves as a force to be reckoned with. The sibling alternative-rock duo from the Irish town of Killarney have a mutual passion for expansive, stadium-sized rock music which has since propelled them beyond the confines of stifled opportunity and into realms of superstar potential.

Produced by Romesh Dodangoda, the duo’s brand-new single, ‘Am I Asleep?’ bursts with textual, cinematic magnitude. The track’s sweeping post-rock soundscapes alternate between tender, evocative and aggressive. Steph O'Sullivan’s voice is the magic ingredient that elevates Greywind into another dimension.

We had a chat with them on the release and more...

Hey guys! Introduce yourselves and tell us a little about you!

"We're siblings Steph and Paul O’Sullivan and we live in the south of Ireland in a town called Killarney. We spent years looking for people to start a band with when we were younger, but we could never find anyone so one day we just decided to start this band ourselves as a two-piece because we didn't want to waste anymore time waiting. Shortly after, we recorded a demo of our first ever song ‘Afterthoughts’ and posted it online. Since that day the reaction has been insane and we've been lucky enough to have performed at Reading and Leeds Festival, Isle of Wight Festival, Download Festival, Rock Am Ring and have supported the likes of You Me At Six, Palaye Royale, Thrice among others."

Where are you from? Do you feel your surroundings have impacted your sound at all?

"We live in a town called Killarney in Ireland. We’re surrounded by forest and lakes here so I definitely think that has impacted our sound as we’re a very visual band in the sense that we love bringing that imagery into our lyrics, artwork and music videos."

When did you start making music?

"The first song we ever wrote and demoed was a song called Afterthoughts in 2014!"

Is there a story behind the name?

"I have a t-shirt with the names of all the direwolves from Game of Thrones on it and one day when we were talking about band names and Steph noticed the name Grey Wind on my t-shirt. As soon as she said it out loud we both knew that name perfectly described the music we were creating. I said to combine the words and then Greywind was born!"

If you had to sum up your sound in 3 words, what would you say?

"Atmospheric. Emotional. Epic."

Who would be your dream collaboration?

"I think our dream collaboration would be with My Chemical Romance or The Killers. They were two of the bands that made us want to start Greywind in the first place so it would be so special to work with them or tour with them in the future!"

Over the years, you’ve released your debut album, played massive festival stages and been backed by major radio stations. Do you have any specific highlights that stand out above the rest?

"We feel really lucky to have had a lot of highlights so far but Zane Lowe playing us on the radio and saying incredibly kind words about us is definitely one of our favourite moments! We spent our childhood watching him interviewing our favourite bands on MTV so to have him play and love our music is incredible."

You’ve just released your new single ‘Am I Asleep?’ Tell us a little about it!

"During the writing process for ‘Am I Asleep?’ we were heavily inspired by movies. We’ve always aimed to bring a cinematic sound to our music and visuals and we wanted to expand on that more than ever. We’ve always loved leaving our songs open to interpretation as one of our favourite things about music is allowing the listener to connect to the song in their own way instead of us telling them what to feel. We love reading our fans theories about our songs."

Do you have a favourite lyric or part of the track?

"My personal favourite part of the track is at 2:22. It’s such a massive part of the song when everything is soaring and when you think it can’t get any bigger, it does! That’s why I love it so much. When we wrote it we both looked at each other knowing that we had written something special."

The release is accompanied by a music video! Was there a specific concept behind the visuals?

"For the ‘Am I Asleep?’ music video we wanted to create a dreamlike world that our fans can escape into. There are a lot of hidden references in the song and music video so we’re looking forward to seeing if any of our fans can find them!"

What’s coming up for you guys in 2021?

"We don’t want to give everything away just yet but we have a lot of exciting things coming up in 2021! New music, shows and lots of other exciting things we’re so excited to announce in the next few months."
