Newcomer Maya Lane has unveiled her brand new single, titled 'When You Need Me,' a dedication of poignant unconditional love for her younger sister and a promise to always be by her side. Having released previous singles 'Childish Games' and 'Still The Same,' her song-writing ability is truly exceptional. She is set to release her eagerly anticipated debut EP later this year. A young artist with a soul and maturity far beyond her years, she is certainly one to watch, using her phenomenal talent to express her emotions.
Here at The Lowdown, we had the opportunity to speak with Maya Lane about her new single, who her musical influences are and much more. Keep reading to check out what she had to say!
Welcome to The Lowdown! Please introduce yourself to our readers.
"Hi! My name is Maya Lane. I'm a nineteen year old singer/song-writer from London. I'm obsessed with all genres of music, the seventies and vintage fashion and finding new food places to eat."
You have recently released your new single, titled 'When You Need Me.' How does it feel to have new music released?
"It feels amazing! I absolutely love releasing new music. It's so special to be able to share what I've been working on and see how it connects with people. I've been working on my music for a long time, but only started releasing it this year, so sometimes I forget it's actually out there until it comes on a Spotify playlist or starts playing from one of my friends' phones! It's great as you feel like you're sharing a part of yourself with others, especially as so much of what I write about are my emotions!"
You have been compared to huge names such as Taylor Swift, Kacey Musgraves and HAIM. What does it feel like to be compared to such phenomenal artists?
"I feel extremely flattered and find it mind-blowing that my name has been mentioned in the same sentence as them! They are all artists who really inspire me and have played such an important part in my journey of discovering the kind of artist I want to be."
For anyone who hasn't heard any of your releases to date, can you sum up your sound in a couple of words?
"I would describe my sound as pop with folk and country influences, but if I had to sum it up in three words, it would be authentic, heartfelt and timeless. I try not to box myself into one genre or style of music and instead write what feels authentic and right for me in the moment."
'When You Need Me' is a dedication to the unconditional love for your younger sister. Did you find it easier to draw on personal experience when songwriting?
"'When You Need Me' was a really special song to write. It was one of those moments where the lyrics came so naturally and felt as though they were almost pouring out of me. I never thought I would be able to write a song about love for a sibling without it being cheesy or cringey and personally, I don't feel like it is. When writing my music, I tend to write both from experience and imagination (putting myself in other people's shoes). While I love being able to dive into someone else's world, there was something very personal and therapeutic about writing 'When You Need Me.'"
You are set to release your debut EP later this year. What can listeners expect from this EP?
"I am beyond excited to release my EP! As I mentioned before, it's been a long time in the making. I'm still having to wrap my head around the fact it's actually coming out! In terms of what to expect, it features the music I have released so far, the songs you know and hopefully love, as well as an additional song, which is a little more uptempo! For me personally, the theme of the EP is centred around the struggles of growing up and the transition from being a teenager to adulthood. However, when releasing music, I am always really interested to hear how others interpret it and relate to the music in their own way."
Who would you say are your musical influences?
"I take inspiration from everywhere! I grew up listening to a wide range of music, from folk, reggae, pop and hip-hop to rock, but the music that I've always been the most drawn to and influenced is by 60's and 70's folk and country music. The story-telling song-writing of artists like Bob Dylan and the effortless timeless vocals of Joni Mitchell forever inspire me. In terms of more current/modern artists, I'm really inspired by artists such as Kacey Musgraves, HAIM and Harry Styles."
Aside from the release of your EP later this year, what else does 2022 have in store for you? Are there some live performances planned potentially?
"There are lots of really exciting things planned for 2022. I have some live shows planned, such as 110 Above Festival in August. I am always updating my social media with exciting plans and shows, so make sure you are following me to stay up-to-date!"
Finally, do you have a message for all those who support you?
"Thank you to everyone who is joining me along this journey - your support means everything to me! I can't wait to see where it takes us all next!"
